Saab used 205/50-16 size tires for the NG900 (MY1994-1998) and on the 9-3 (MY1999-2001). For the 9-3 MY2002, Saab used 205/55-16 size tires. The Viggen model of the 9-3 came stock with 215/45-17 size tires.
205/50-16 equals a diameter of 24.07-inches and a circumference of 75.62-inches.
205/55-16 equals a diameter of 24.88-inches and a circumference of 78.16-inches, or approximately 2.7% larger than the 205/50-16.
There are many more choice of tires in the 205/55-16 size as it is used on more vehicles such as Audi, Volvo, etc.
I personally run 205/55-16 size tires on my NG900 and the speedometer, odometer, and SID all show the MPH and miles driven as 3% lower than actual measured values. This is exactly as would be expected as the car is calibrated for 205/50-16 tires and the 205/55-16 tires are 2.7% larger, fooling the car into having an inaccurate readings.
If the slight inaccuracy of the speedometer bothers you, depending on the model and year, a dealer can use the TECH II to set the speedometer/odometer for a standard range of tire sizes.
