As some may recall from my previous posts, I had a problem with cooling loss through the reservoir cap. I had replaced all the hoses, t-stat, and cap. When fully warmed up and at idle I had turbulence in the coolant reservoir, and could see that I was blowing coolant right through the cap.
Following advice from this forum I re-torqued the headbolts (loosened one at a time, torqued to 44#, then +90 degrees). NOT following the advice of this forum I did not replace the head bolts, just used the existing bolts.
The problem seemed resolved and life was good... for maybe 1000 miles. Now I am once again losing coolant and it appears to be blowing past the reservoir cap. I do not see turbulence in the reservoir at idle as before however, but I'm guessing at higher rpm it would be.
The question is this: could the old head bolts have stretched more, allowing leakage between the combustion chamber and the water jacket, pressurizing the cooling system? Is a head gasket replacement inevitable, or might installing NEW head bolts resolve the problem once and for all? I'm thinking new head bolts is worth a shot. If that doesn't work I can default to a head gasket job.
Thoughts on this?
Thanks!
