Input shaft speed sensor / code P0717

Hi all,
Does anyone have experience with no signal coming from the input shaft speed sensor (code P0717)? I have been experiencing this error every once in a while on my 2002 SE, and when it happens, the car goes into limp-home mode, which for the auto transmission means no first through third gears. It does not happen all the time, but frequently enough. I changed the input speed sensor, but the problem is still there. It is possible that the new one is bad too (I got the new sensor on ebay, but it was advertised as brand new and OEM, and it appears to be legitimate and from a reputable seller). It also seems that our cars have the intelligence to offer a different trouble code for the case when the sensor is in functional condition and it is sensing a real problem. P0717 seems to only be an indication that the signal is missing. Am I right about that? Can this be an actual internal transmission issue, or likely just a lack of signal? The car drives fine otherwise. I don't see a reason why wiring would be the problem. I am planning to swap the input and output sensors to see if the code changes, but does anyone have any words of wisdom here?
Thanks very much,
Eric S.
