Well you can always consider my horror stories with a year new 9-3 and a LOT less miles ;)
Seriously though, other than obvious stuff, I *think* the most important thing to know about is the sludge issue and basically if that engine is gonna blow like mine did. Short of taking stuff apart, I'm not sure how you could check for that. Of course service records would help. With that many miles it's hard to "own" the car. Your success will be mostly dependent on who owned it before.
I find most people that own various cars maintain them very little. That's why it's better to get a low mileage used car and check the living hell out of it. If possible, take it to a body shop and a mechanic. Even a body shop and yourself checking things over for a few days would be helpful.
At any rate, $1000 isn't much for a car. So, you'll have to take that in consideration with the other advice and basically decide how much you want to gamble in terms of time and money on this thing. I really hate the idea of "throwing out" any vehicle I buy, and really never have. That's me though, and I do NOT recommend that for others. It makes life long and rather difficult, but it does save some money in the long run.
