2000 9-3.
Removing the bracket is the WAY to GO!
I just wanted to confirm to anyone who may question whether it is better to go from the bottom or the top, there is no question. Getting the alternator out from the top is the way to go.

After reading multiple older post on Alternator removal, I wanted to contribute so that there would be a more recent posting.
[FYI: Alternator bolts are 8mm]
Follow all the other directions:
Remove the belt tensioner(mine actually broke while removing it, causing me to have to cut the belt off).
Remove the wheel and the plastic cover in the wheel well.
Soak the bolts for the alternator with PB Blaster just to be sure.
Get a solid 8mm allen key and remove the alternator.(in my case my socket adapter wouldn't fit between the engine and the wheel well.)
(DISCONNECT the BATTERY)
Remove the cables from the alternator, 13mm and 8mm.
Then remove the four bolts holding the bracket(13mm). (The bolts seem to be aluminum and weren't very tight.) Then remove the bracket

Then lift the sucker right out of there!
