upstream = before catalyst
downstream = after catalyst
therefore:
o2 bank 1, sensor 1 = upstream (closest to engine)
o2 bank 1, sensor 2 = downstream (farther from engine)
so,
02 bank 1 sensor 1 = the sensor staring you in the face when you open up the hood.
on my 01' (unknown if us or euro spec car), it sits by the spark plugs, two inches before the pre-cat (or whatever term saab uses for it).
02 bank 1 sensor 2 = the sensor underneath the car ( i am not going to lift it to check), sitting by the primary cat.
bank 2's are for some "V" style (example V8) motors which have a y-pipe and dual cats. not for 4 cylinder in-lines like saabs.
like SC said, it's gotta heat up to 650F to work at all, if it does not, the pcm (or whatever saab calls it), will run in open loop mode and mileage will suffer running rich all the time, with very good possibility of catalytic converter ($) damage.
also possibility of sensor 2 being carbon fouled if left running this way. i would check and clean it just to be sure. explained how somewhere here i think.
good luck.
