My dad just bought a 2002 with one key and is having the same problem.
After reading the very helpful FAQ I'm still unclear as to whether the banana has the transponder for the ignition AND the remote lock/unlock. Or if it's JUST the lock/unlock. I was under the impression that you need a new key with the transponder and a used banana-- and not just a key if you want to go that route. Or a one piece key with the lock/unlock and the ignition transponder both built in. Am not sure if a dumb key and a recoded banana will suffice.
My dad was referred to a locksmith who bought the rest of the blanks from the dealer when the dealer closed. Was quoted $125 for a coded key ("cloned" I think). Doubt the locksmith has the Tech II. Or he might end up having to take the key back to the dealer for coding. Also doubt this one will have the remote unlock or the banana. Suspect it's just a key with the transponder for the ignition and that the doors will have to be opened with the key. We'll see on Monday.
The local indy has NONE of any flavor. And when he gets them in two-three weeks they'll be 225.00. These might be the fully functional ones though with lock/unlock. Although I don't know because his prices are typically high.
There are a couple of used keys online for $75.00 or so. Then there's the "dumb" blade from the locksmith. And the coding with the Tech II. Figure by the time it's all said and done it'll be close to the $225 at the indy. Of course you might end up getting remote lock/unlock.
By buddy just went through this a few months ago and thought Sports Car Service in Delaware had keys and could code. Not sure if they still do.
Good luck.
