So I find a website that sells the ribbon wire connection in the US (there is an overseas vendor for more money) for the SID unit to cure the 50% missing pixels, but I need to know if I have an SID 1 or and SID 2. Blue tape on the dash facia, two small flatblade screw drivers and the SID unit pops out with no damage to the dash. Great start. Its an SID 2. Good, now I know what to order. Hey, this is too easy.
OK, so now would be a good time to swap out my tinny sounding, buzzy interference ridden original radio with no bass with that 9-3 Viggen radio I got a few years back from I guy I bought some wheels from in K of P, PA. Recall reading that the 1999's did not need to be divorced, so lets do it. Old radio out in seconds, five plugs out and connected to the "new" radio. SID back in, key and radio on, and IT SOUNDS GREAT! Plus, all the pixels work unlike the original radio! Then after 10 seconds, radio shuts off and reads "Radio Locked" (actually it said
"Pac c Icckcd) on the SID. Did this several times, after a shut-off and restart, locked / unlocked doors, etc. Same result.
Check this board and we need a four digit code. I recall that from my C900 and 9000. But as this car doesn't get much use and the battery dies occasionaly in winter storage, I never needed a four digit code for the radio. If I do need one, is the code relative to the VIN? Then I might have the code in my owners book, or can recover it from a dealer (ha). Is the code relative to the radio unit? Then I'm screwed I guess. Or can a a tech II service cure this?
Thanks in advance. I will post on the ribbon repair on the SID once I get the part next week. Its a $20 ribbon versus a $150 remanufactured unit, or a 30 Euro british part.
Oh by the way, the radio that came out of the car had a "remanufactured" sticker on it. No wonder it sounded like shiat.
