If you are even slightly computer savy you might want to consider the obdII reader from http://www.obd-2.com/
I bought this many years ago when the car had rough idling and the dealer could not get a good diagnosis. The reason was they simply did leave the scanner on long enough and in use on the road.
This version uses your laptop and their cable to scan the codes. I've been really happy with this for years and has allowed me to diagnose problems that don't always show as codes initially but are marginal failures (like voltages that are getting close to their bad limits.
If all this is too complex use the canned scanners. If you are looking to be able to dig into almost anything get the software.
