I replaced the head and related gaskets. It will only start with starter fluid. When started it runs smooth and quiet for quite a while but puts out white smoke?
I did have the fuel rail moved to the side to remove the old head. Could I have missed something on reassembly? The ground wires are attached properly and there appears to be a vacuum line at the end of the fuel rail that returns to the throttle assembly?
Some background if it's relevant. I bought this car as non running project. The prior owner said it ran fine until his daughter drove it after it had overheated. He was told it needed a new engine after the non Saab shop (where I towed it from) removed the valve cover and found plenty of coolant. The head was too warped to machine. I put a good used one on and fixed a poorly installed water pump / turbo intake hanging on by one bolt the prior owner had done. I've not done a compression test since replacing the head. That's where I'm going next.
Thanks for reading this far. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
