Unfortunately the brake boosters cannot be repaired easily. It is a rubber seal at the back of booster that gets damaged and slides out of its confinement.
The Saab and Volvo boosters of this era goes bad in exactly the same way.
The Viggen booster is also used on the RHD 9-5 between 98 and 2001.
If you can use another booster is anyone's guess. It could be as easy as that the two studs for brake master cylinder is clocked in a certain way or it could be as intricate that the vacuum boost assist is perfectly tuned to the brake master cylinder capacity and size/style of brake calipers, pads and rotors.
The only obvious difference I see between the 2001 9-5 booster and the 2002 9-5 is the way the two studs are located for master cylinder making it impossible to swap out the two. But it could also be that the inside is changed since the 2002 9-5 comes with ESP.
For safety reasons and ease of completing the job, finding a Viggen booster or a 98-01 9-5 booster from a RHD country would probably be your best choice.
