Both my '00 9-3 and my dad's '02 9-3 had aluminum crush washers on the feed from the pump to the turbo, at the pump. I'm not sure how you would properly use an o-ring to seal a banjo fitting.

Having done a half dozen water pumps at this point, I gotta say that the most magical adjustment to the procedure for me was the result of a coincidence... when I did the pump the '02 a couple weeks ago, I was also replacing the suction hose for the power steering system. Having that hose out of the way when doing the pump was AMAZING, as it gave the PS pump a lot of freedom to move. I was able to do the entire job from the top, no cursing or swearing.

1. Remove delivery pipe to TB
2. Drain radiator
3. Remove upper radiator hose (should replace it)
4. Suck out PS fluid using some sort of suction device
5. Remove PS suction hose at reservoir, support hose vertically or dump out and remove entirely
6. Remove airbox
7. Remove intake tube
8. Remove serpentine belt from PS and WP pulleys - just leave it in the engine bay
9. Undo PS pump, lay in the cavity where the airbox was
10. Remove PS bracket from engine
11. Remove two bolts holding cooling lines to the driver's side of the head (one in front, one in back)
12. Undo lower radiator hose at WP
13. Undo u-shaped hose at WP
14. Undo cooling tube on the side of the WP
15. Loosen the cooling tube at the turbo, just little
16. Undo the cooling tube banjo at the WP
17. Undo three bolts holding WP to block

I did the whole job in about 2.5 hours. It was not a big deal. I replaced the upper radiator hose, the little u-shaped hose, all three WP o-rings, and two WP banjo crush washers. Bonus: Half-flushed the power steering system. ;) I wouldn't hesitate to do it this way again. *Forget* wiggling the WP out from under the PS pump, forget about trying to properly seat that annoying intermediate tube in the block under the PS pump. Everything is in plain sight and easily accessible.
