Vacuum and brake booster hose question

On the 2000 9-3 I noticed the brakes felt less powerful than usual, but not spongy like there's air in the system (no, the system has not been opened to the air). Pumping the brakes doesn't change the feel. So I'm thinking vacuum issue.
The short plastic vacuum hose with the one-way valve that goes from the brake booster to the intake manifold is a *really* loose fit in the the black bushing (the one with the red clip) so I suspect the leak may be there. It just lifts out with almost no effort.
A post by Anders a few weeks back suggests using a new O-ring and clip in the old bushing. Anyone else done this? Should I be looking at the plastic hose, which is crazy overpriced at $200-235. Is there a way to test that hose?
Need to get this fixed ASAP, so any input is welcome!
Thanks!
