Sometime in mid 1997 (i have been told) SAAB changed to Pentosin CHF 11S hydraulic fluid for the power steering. 'PENTOSIN' is a European company and 'CHF' stands for central hydraulic fluid, '11S' is the type or formula number. Audi, Mercedes, Opel, and VW among others use this fluid in some of their vehicles.
Before I figured this out, I drained all my Pentosin CHF 11S fluid from my 1998 900SET and changed to Valvoline Syn-Power Power steering fluid. The Valvoline seemed to give better cold power steering performance. It is 20,000 miles later, and I have no problems.
I have e-mailed SAAB and Pentosin asking if the Vavoline and Pentosin CHF 11S were compatible and if the seals, etc. in the power steering system were compatible with the Valvoline PS fluid. I got no response for both parties. When I asked my dealer what they used in the PS system, they said standard GM PS fluid. They had never heard about the PS fluid being synthetic from the factory. From my experience, and from the dealers mixing of fluid, it APPEARS that the Pentosin CHF 11S is compatible with regular PS fluid.
Of course, the safest option would be to buy SAAB brand PS fluid.
