Hello all
Strange situation today. Car died in slow moving traffic (1996 900S, 2.3L non-turbo, automatic, 410,000km); immediately before dying the "check gear box", "winter", "sport", ABS, and parking brake lights all came on for a second, and then various other idiot lights started to flicker on and off. Managed to push it into a parking space and it would crank normally but not start, however when key was left in the "on" position (as opposed to "start") various warning lights in the cluster would flicker on and off and I could hear relays clicking and buzzing, both in the box under the dash and at various places under the hood. Thought it might be the battery finally flaking out (it's going on 8 years old and tends to lose voltage, particularly when left sitting) but luckily I had a spare in the trunk. Swapped them and the car started after a couple of tries, ran fine, got me to work no problem.
When leaving work, in the pouring rain of course, car would again not start. Similar symptoms ("check gear box", "winter", "sport", ABS, and parking brake lights all came on for a second, and then started to flicker on and off when key was in "on" position, accompanied by a chorus of buzzing and clicking relays). Only difference was that this time, when trying to start, ONLY the "check gear box", "winter", "sport", ABS, and parking brake lights would come on, rather than the whole set of warning lights as usually happens when starting up. After some swearing, I reasoned that if disconnecting and reconnecting the battery had fixed it before, perhaps doing so would fix it again, and sure enough it worked. Started up fine and got me home.
Any suggestions as to what is happening here? Is it possible that some electronic component (ECU? DICE module?) is being reset by being disconnected and then working temporarily until the next start attempt. Only flaw in that reasoning is that it actually died while running the first time. Or is the alternator dodgy & starting to die?
Have recently replaced the ignition switch due to some other problems, so I doubt that's it. Within the past couple of years I've also replaced the neutral safety switch and crankshaft position sensor.
I have a 1996 2.0L turbo motor including all relays and electronics, does anyone know if I can just plug in the ECU or DICE from that one and have everything work normally?
thanks in advance for your help!
