Ok,
Few weeks ago, alternator went. I tried, stripped bolt. Had shop fix it. Got the car back last week, drove fine around town, so took it on 100+ mile business trip. Most of the way to my destination, I got a bad belt squeak taking a highway off ramp, and then small puddle of oil when I stop.
After looking at it a while, I've found where oil is coming from. Not sure the exact terminology, but it's on the flat spot of the block where it meats the head, on the back corner by the tensioner pulley. Then the oil's dripping down the block and hitting the crankshaft and getting on the serpentine belt there.
What are the most likely causes? Is this a headgasket torquing issue at this point? (Is that the correct corner for the bolt #10 loose issue?)
It looks like I've lost a quart and a half in about 300 miles now (adding as I go here to keep level adequate), so it's bad enough I can't just wait this out.
What I'm most interested in knowing: What is the most likely reasons for such a leak?, is it likely that they caused this issue when changing the alternator by prying on the engine funny? And, what is recommended things to continue working towards a definite diagnosis?
Since I just put $700 into a new alternator installed (needed lower alt bracket as we went here, and new battery), I'm hoping this isn't a death sentence. If a headgasket retorque is likely to be sufficient, I have already purchased bolts and haven't gotten to it, would be quite willing to try that, etc...
Thanks in advance for any insights.
