2000 Saab 9-3, base model, auto, 150,000 miles
Car died about a mile from my house. Twice before, it died, but I was able to restart immediately and it ran fine. This time, it throws codes P0300 and P1300 and really runs terribly. I limped it home basically by pressing the accelerator hard, which resulted in a weird rhythmic surging of the engine. Not pretty, but I was able to get home (mostly downhill with the engine off). There was a faint smell when I got out of the car.
Without knowing more, I'm guessing its the fuel pump or the DIC/IDM. My DIC/IDM has about 75,000 miles on it, having been replaced as part of a recall.
While I know that it's time to replace the IDM, I really only anticipate keeping this car until the end of the year, so I don't want to put in a new DIC if that's not going to solve my immediate problem.
SO... I see that people are pulling the DIC and installing the plugs in the DIC and firing the engine and looking for spark to see if it's working. What I don't understand is how people are grounding the spark plugs during this test. Any ideas?
And of course I welcome any other input you may have on my predicament.
Thanks-
Island Saab
