When the car battery died, the alarm fell back to run off the internal alarm battery... which being old, doesn't have much life in it. When that battery goes, the alarm is triggered. You need to replace your alarm battery now.
Not sure about alternator vs. regulator. Someone like Swede might know how to differentiate. I don't even know if you can buy the regulator separately anymore.
