Ac pulley noisy and sliding back and forth

2001 convertible ...61900 miles....
Yesterday while driving noticed a coming and going noise from the engine area.
Looking at the pulleys, it's the ac pulley sliding back and forth ...as it slides towards the compressor it makes noise, and then slides outward again and then again towards the compressor..
Ac is working for now
What's involved in fixing this?
Is there a spacer that might have broken off or worn off between the pulley and the compressor,,,is it the pulley bearing and is that the way to go. Is this something I can do, or is there someplace that sells the pulley and clutch as a unit if that's all I need?
Or do I need to replace the entire compressor...
The cheaper alternative the better of course.
Would it be ok to drive the car while this is going on., or do I risk a seized pulley and belt...
Interesting that this would be the first pulley to go....the idler and tensioner are still original and was planning to replace the idler and belt soon....
All help is appreciated.
