As Anders and Chad said, it can get quite expensive. About 50% of my clients here in sunny Florida have a 9-3 convertible, so fairly versed on them at this point.
Your OG9-3 has five pistons which run ~$550ea new or about half that for rebuilt, ten hydraulic lines which run ~$180ea and an assortment of microswitches and relays. Since these OG9-3s can be bought for $1800-3500 all day long, making extensive repairs on these becomes a decision of love for the car vs real dollar sense.
I have a client who last year got a set of ten lines installed and replaced all the pistons on his '99 9-3 with about 110k at the time. The cost was just shy of $5000, which can buy you two entire running 9-3s now. Two months ago, another client got ten lines and two pistons replaced.
Some take the commitment and make repairs, just understand it can be an expensive battle sometimes.
