Rolling or slowly engaging the clutch used to help slide it in. Now I just have to slam it and hope for the best. I figured out that pulling back really hard on it while wiggling the key, even if it doesn't go into gear, I can get the key to turn all the way and come out. That's at least resolved my constant dead battery issue
