Would starter fluid solve a bad crank pos sensor?

2000 Saab 9-3 base model 155,000 miles impeccably maintained (except for suspension that needs work!)
LIttle bit of a mind bender question. lately, my 9-3 won't start if the engine has been run recently. It starts fine the first time and runs fine when started.
But turn it off and try to turn it right back on and it won't start. It will crank and crank but not start. Leave it for a few hours and it will start right up.
Out of a need to really get from A to B, I sprayed starter fluid into the throttle body and it started right up.
After research, I see that this problem is often caused by a bad crank position sensor. I know there's a way to check the resistance across the sensor pins (though I don't know the details), but I'm just trying to work through this in my mind.
Is there even a need to check the sensor? How could it be the crankcase position sensor if starter fluid got it running?
Wouldn't that point towards something else (I know not what)?
THanks...
