Last night I decided I was going into the door and not coming out until it was fixed or I at least knew what parts I needed.
Turns out that the mystery disc is a nut used to hold a "slider" (my term) to the window. There are two of these sliders on the side of the window towards the back of the car. The same kind of nuts are also used to hold the upper roller channel to the window. The nylon on the nut is to protect the glass since they go to bolts running through holes in the glass.
The sliders fit into a channel and seem to do most of the work in keeping the window straight since the channel towards the front of the car is essentially a cushioned groove for the window to slide in. In my case the nut for the upper slider had fallen off and allowed the slider and it's bolt to move freely. As far as I can tell when I tried to put the window down the bolt (no longer going through the hole in the window where it is meant to go) would hit the window and bind it from going down any further.
Two things made this job take a while:
Since the window was stuck up I ended up having to drill out the rivets on the lift mechanism in order to get the window free.
To screw the nut back onto the roller I had to pull the window out of the door. That in itself was pretty easy - it was putting it back in that was tricky.
