Hi all,
Well, ive been fighting vibrations through my steering wheel and the car in general for a long time! Ive done lots of inspections and added many new parts. The car has also been to 2 indy's, both of which "know" Saabs; i question that at times.I think today i may have found the culprit. Where the right side inner driver/cup connects to the splined end of the intermediate shaft, i have lots of play in that "splined" connection. If i had to guess, i would say almost 1/4" up and down movement and about 1/8" , side to side movement. It could be less, but those are my guesses. This is "play" in the splines themselves. There appears to be no play when i "twist" that splined joint/connection.I dont see how this could "not " cause an imbalance, and vibrations.Note: All these vibrations only happen at highway speeds. Now, going way back this summer, when i inspected both axles, i had a bear of a time getting the connection in discussion apart! I cleaned, wire brushed, and applied a small amount of anti-sieze to the splines of intermediate shaft and recieving cup/driver. Now its VERY loose. Do i need all new pieces including carrier bearing?. Can i swap to 1999-02 right side axle components?. Would i gain anything with using the 99+ pieces outside of 1 less joint to wear? The car in question is a 1997 NG with about 170K, and some extra power added. Thanks in advance
