If my car went THUNK while boosting, what does it mean?

1999 9-3SE 5speed, 168,000 miles
Hi. second time this has happened. Both times under quick hard boost. aka "flooring it" in either 2nd or maybe 3rd.
from mild throttle position to floor slight load as in uphill, 2 seconds into the hard acceleration, it went THUNK. (nearly popped me out of gear). I layer off the gas pedal and kind of gripped the shifter and drove more sensibly and mild after that and everything was fine.
What I THINK but don't know/understand is: that i might have jumped a tooth on the drive chain. Im just basing this on my super expert knowledge (NOT) of mechanics. ... more so based on riding bikes my whole life, for that's what it "felt/sounded" like.
I don't even know what I"m talking about here, but there is a drive chain in the motor right? is that what jumped a tooth? if so, does that mean my chain is stretched? if so, what the heck do i do about it???
thanks!
Brad
