Hello. To help others, I thought I would post what I did and used for new speakers in my 99'. I came here to research on speaker compatibility, installation, etc before I decided what to install. I want to thank all those that posted about speaker installation and choices here.
I'm posting in the event that others are wanting to do a similar install and keep the original head unit and still have a decent sound improvement. I decided to not only replace all 4 speakers, but also add the door speakers the SE model has.
There have been questions asking if the car is prewired in the door to add speakers and mine was prewired. There is also wiring for the amp that is prewired. Once I found saw that it was, I went to the junkyard and found the factory amp (and black wire and amps bracket) in the junkyard from a donor car. If you decide to do what I did, also be sure to find the black round brackets and screws that hold the door speakers. Also make sure to take home with you the screws that screw the speaker to the door bracket. If you wish to use the male Saab speaker connectors in the car and not cut them off, then also be sure to take the connectors off the speakers at the junkyard or take the entire speaker home and remove them there.
I didn't cut any of the speaker connectors off and made my own wiring harness using the female connectors from the old speakers and buying female disconnects from radio shack and the hardware store.
I bought all Polk Audio speakers. For the front dash I used DXi350 3.5". In the rear I used DXi690 6" X 9" 2 ways. For the doors I used DXi6501 6.5 woofers. The DXi6501 is a component speaker system, but I only used the 6.5 inch woofers. I also bought the 600HZ bass blockers for the dash speakers to minimize too much bass from getting to them. I am not sure this is needed, but it seems so and the woofers are producing enough bass. It was cheaper to just use the woofers from the component system than to purchase Saab's original door speaker.
To allow the new woofer to fit flush in the original door speaker bracket I used a multi function tool to cut 28 small plastic raised bumps around the front of the plastic bracket. The new woofer's screw holes only line up 3 of the 4 holes on the bracket. The speaker was able to be secured to the bracket only using 3 of the 4 holes to screw the speaker to the bracket.
Granted I got the speakers on sale from Crutchfield, the total price for the 6 speakers and the bass blockers was $270.00.
Hope that helped.
