The reason I ask about the fuel level sensor is that it is one specific position for the fuel pump to be clocked at and the white cover have a ridge line that is suppose to match up with a similar line on the gas tank.
All other positions are a guess and the float might snag on things inside the tank making the fuel gauge inaccurate.
But I don't think the float lever would mess with fuel vapor system so you might have two problems.
