Injectors Actuate Prior to Cranking in Run Position

I have an acquaintance with a 2000 9-3 SE that he acquired recently that has an issue I've never seen. I haven't actually looked at the car since this occurred so some details may still be missing or wrong but it sounds like the injectors are opening (easily audible and touching an injector indicates they are the source of sound)prior to cranking when the key is just short of engaging the starter (in the run position). I don't know if they do so for only a brief period or for as long as the key stays there but, when the car starts, it misfires terrifically due to wet plugs. It's done this on 2 occaisions and both times letting it sit for a bit resloved it for the time being. I told him to turn the key smartly all the way to the starter position and not to see if it clicks if he holds it in the run position for now. He also called again last night and said the CEL came on while underway, which isn't surprising, and now the car does a little hiccup when throttle is lifted and then reapplied. Haven't had a chance to get the code yet though.
If anyone can shed any light on this that would be great.
