Just a note on hatch shocks for my 1997 900SE. I've got 171K on it and never thought much about the shocks. Sure, the hatch could come crashing down, crushing anything in its path but I guess I got used to supporting it myself. There was some leakage so I bought a couple of Stabilus SG218005. They fit perfectly and I'm really happy with they way they work. Once you lift the hatch about 18" it rises on its own quickly and slows near the end. Pulling down there's good resistance until about 12" from being closed. I don't know if they vary but on mine, the spring clip is not taken out all the way. You just lift it a little with a screwdriver while pulling the strut out of the socket. Same going back on. Now get those shocks! It would be an embarrassing way to lose your life. On the other hand, you could finally achieve stardom on "1000 Ways to Die".
