I had parked my 2001 9-3 in 2012 after 11 years of CEL issues. Recently I decided to give it another go. With every CEL issue addressed, the vehicle simply blows codes.
Example: Drove the vehicle for 120 miles, plus or minus 1 mile, and got a P1105. Reset and it did the same at 119 miles and 121 miles. I tested the turbo by-pass and it failed. Changed out with a new one and now it blows the same code at 24 miles, plus or minus 1 mile. Reset several times and now I get a P1105 and a P0300. Reset again and the CEL has been off for approx. 60 miles. I have not been able to keep it off for more than 150 miles at a time.
In CT, the CEL has to be clear for 175 miles to pass inspection. The odd thing is that it passes inspection if tested manually, but they won't give me a pass on the CEL. In the past, before the law changed, I reset the CEL in the parking lot before the test, I stuck a business card in front of the CEL, I put a small piece of black electrical tape over the CEL. It passed every time. That's the rub, the car runs great and never give me an issue, except the CEL from hell. After 6 cassettes, several throttle bodies, crank shaft sensors, turbo by-pass, 4 turbos, updating and testing the ECU, etc., etc., I'm not sure what's left besides pushing it over a cliff.
#1 Fact: I know several 9-3 drivers and they all laugh when I mention the CEL issue. They wouldn't know what to do if the CEL was "off" is the common reply.
Question: Does anyone know of a tuner that could modify the ECU so it wasn't so bloody sensitive?
