1999 9-3 issues Posted by JerseySaab [Email] ![]() ![]() |
A friend of mine just purchased a low-bucks 1999 9-3 5-door hatchback. It basically runs well but has a few issues. I'm not very familiar with this model (have only owned C900 and 9000 Saabs), so please bear with me if this stuff is "well known" to most on this board.
The main issue with the car is that the headlights are not working. Parking lights work when the switch is in either the parking light or headlight position. I was able to find wiring diagrams online for 1997 900 which hopefully is substantially the same. It looks like the ignition switch feeds the headlight switch to energize both the headlights and parking lights. The headlight switch then uses this current to trip the headlight control relay to do the actual dirty work. Since parking lights are coming on, does this eliminate the ignition switch as a possible cause?
Aside from that, the car has only one key, the type with the separate "banana" remote. I have warned my friend about the consequences of losing all the keys. What is the best source for another key, maybe from the auction site and have it joined to the car with a Tech II? (I'm a newbie to electronic key issues since none of my Saabs use them.)
The car has a broken tail-light lens. I don't see any screws for the lens itself, does the entire assembly need to be replaced? What years will fit?
The car has the 5-speed manual transmission and shifts fine in forward speeds, but there is some gear clash shifting into reverse while the engine is running. I think these have hydraulic clutch, maybe just needs to be bled?
I know, I ask a a lot of questions for a guy from Jersey!
