It turned out to be the crank position sensor (CPS) that went dead. Never had this kind of failure before, i.e., total failure; on my 9-5, where the same model sensor is used (made by Bosch), I first experienced issues with starting the engine when warm.
I realized that in the case of the cold start problem it is relatively easy to confirm whether the CPS is the culprit: this can be done by disconnecting it from the system and measuring the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 (there are 3 actual terminals, the 4th is missing). It should be around 940 ohms. In the case of my failure it was an open circuit (infinite resistance), which made it very clear that the component needed to be replaced.
