There is a different procedure used when replacing the head gasket following a major re-build. In that situation you go around the head three times in a spiral path tightening the bolts; 30 ft-lbs on the first lap, 44 ft-lbs for the second lap, and an additional 90 degree turn on the third spiral lap.
Since your head gasket is already compressed just do the one torque plus one twist method for each bolt on one spiraling lap around the head as you described.
