Ok. So we need to establish something called No cranking problems or No starting problems.
No cranking is when the starter motor is not engaging at all or is only producing a rapid clicking noise as in half dead battery.
Your car does not have a clutch pedal cut out switch for starter so that cannot be the problem.
If the starter is happily cranking over the engine but the engine is not firing up, that's a No starting problem.
So what is it?
You also say you already have reverse problems so that could be a slew of problems including internal shift fork problems and shifter linkage problems.
The clutch cable is another sorry piece of engineering and it could have failed halfway not allowing you to release the clutch completely which would stop you from getting it into gear when engine is running.
There are too many variables going on here at the same time for me to answer in one short sentence so I hope you can find a Saab shop nearby that could give you a more precise answer than what you have gotten so far.
