So I finally got around to replacing my long-blown-out door speakers in my '01 SE. The passenger side had been rattling the worst, so I replaced that one first, with a cheap Pyramid 6.5" midbass driver from Amazon; rated at 4ohm so I figured it should be an easier load for the amp than the stock speakers, but might require some tweaking to get the balance right between them and the dash speakers.
I took a break before replacing the driver side speaker, and did about 40 minutes of driving. At around that time I noticed what smelled like a blown capacitor -- that ozone smell. Didn't notice anything amiss with the car. But then when I replaced the driver side speaker after getting home, I found that the speaker didn't work - and neither did the passenger side one.
I assume I must have blown a cap in the amplifier, which would explain the smell; and if the issue was somewhere in the power handling side, that would explain why both channels are gone. I pulled the amp and popped it open, but didn't see any obvious blown caps.
My questions:
1) Is this a common failure part, or am I just lucky?
2) If it is a common issue, which capacitors are likely to be the culprits? I haven't been able to find any useful leads by searching (or visual inspection).
3) Issues to check for that may have caused it? Something like a short in the wiring in the door?
4) Any good aftermarket alternatives, or am I best off buying a salvaged one from ebay? My local junk yard didn't have any - the two NG900/9-3 donor vehicles had already been stripped, so maybe this is a more common issue than I thought.
thanks for any help!
