AC Compressor over-pressure relief valve question. Posted by Gary Stottler [Email] (#1463) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gary Stottler) on Mon, 17 Aug 2015 07:23:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi All,
My son recently bought a 2002 9-3 SE with inoperative AC. We determined that the system was correctly charged, but the clutch was not being turned on. I jumpered the relay and the clutch did engage and the compressor seemed to run fine. However, while I was trying to troubleshoot the electrical side, I foolishly left the relay jumpered and the engine running, and after 3-4 minutes it blew the over-pressure relief valve on the compressor and dumped some (most?) of the refrigerant and oil. So, (obviously) something in the system is plugged up - my first plan is to replace the receiver/dryer. 2 questions:
1) Does the over-pressure relief valve reseat itself and the compressor is OK, or is it a "one time" deal and I need to replace the compressor? I am thinking (hoping?)that it reseats because checked one of the schraeder valves and there is still some pressure in the system.
2) How does the system work electrically? I would think that if the r/d is blocked that the compressor would come on briefly and then shut off when the pressure switch reaches it's limit, but on this car the compressor would never come on at all until I jumpered the relay.
Any intel would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Gary Stottler (usually over on the 99 BB)
