Hey folks, Long time reader here, so I'll start off by saying Thanks! for being a reliable source of so much info over the years. I had to buy a membership to post this message and a classified ad. My Viggen bit the dust this weekend :-( and now I need to figure out some options. Basic history: 2001 steel grey 5-door hatch with 198,000 miles on it. I bought it in 2003 with 23,000 miles on it. The car is in very good shape, with some rust (hood & fender), the AC just died, and I have kept up diligently with services and repairs. I've had some slight engine issue under heavy load over the past 6-9 months -- it occasionally had a hiccup or misfire under heavy load (when the turbo spooled under full throttle in 3rd, 4th, and 5th). It was occasional, and immediate reflex was to let up on gas, and no other symptoms... Until Saturday, the hiccup was more like an engine failure & seize. Pulled over and smoking oil was spewing from the dip tube cap, and the starter cannot turn the engine over. (new starter and fine battery). I saw no warning lights, oil pressure, or alarm.. So I don't necessarily need to diagnose the issue, 'cause I'm 95% sure the engine is dead for life, an it was likely due to the otherwise undiagnosed hiccup, but feel free to ask more details. More importantly, I need to think about what to do with an older car in reasonable shape with a dead motor. I'm pretty much at the point, personally, where it's not quite worth replacing the motor (I think), but I want to ask you about that. Estimates on cost? How do you balance value with cost and benefit? Open to your opinions here! If I move on... tough to think about... what do I do with the Swedish Steel? I'm not inclined (mechanically or with time) quite enough to part out the whole thing myself. I'd love to see it go to an enthusiast, who might keep 'er driving! Otherwise, someone who could sell the parts, or a junkyard, or a donation. Have others here run this scenario? I'm pulling a classified ad here now, and open to options. Thanks for reading, it's been emotional. ~ jack (location 02144)
