I'm working on a semi-basket-case 1997 900s 5-speed convertible. 2.3 engine with distributor/coil ignition.
I bought it for a song and it ran when I bought it, but as I tried to drive it home from the gas station where I'd filled it up, the car stumbled, died, and hasn't wanted to start again.
When trying to start the car, all the dash lights come on, some relays below the dash click, but the starter does not come on. Verified connections at the battery even thought the car doesn't display the typical low-battery dimming of lights when trying to start. I cleaned and re-attached the ground and verified a full battery charge of about 13 volts, and even tried jumping the car to verify the starter circuit got all the amps it needs.
Seemed like maybe the alarm had fired-off the immobilizer (the car didn't come with a fob), so I removed and bypassed the immobilizer. Same behavior - lights on the dash, clicks below the dash, but the starter did not run.
I checked the power with the key at "start" and while I am getting power to the fuel pump, I am not getting any power at the starter relay, fuse, or at the jumper on the immobilizer connector (pin 8).
Any ideas are of interest - but I would like to verify that power to the starter relay should come directly from the key-ignition...correct? Everywhere I look for ignition information I keep getting fed information about DI cassette failures...
Many thanks!
