Update, lesson learned Posted by SPG Jr [Email] (#1830) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SPG Jr) on Thu, 26 Mar 2020 05:48:23 In Reply to: Oil in the brake booster...just the booster?, SPG Jr [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 9 Mar 2020 17:48:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The fluid dripping from the booster was actually power steering fluid, which I discovered only after replacing the brake booster and MC.
Brake pedal had definitely become soft and booster was hissing so the booster was ready to be replaced anyway. The MC may have been ok but I took the opportunity to replace it and clean out the reservoir.
After cleaning everything in that area and test driving, there was still a leak in that area, traced to the upper PS pressure hose that goes to the rack. Leak is nearly invisible, on the bottom/inward of the crimped union between the rubber hose and hard pipe, it must spray around quite a bit when it's pressurized. Never even occurred to me that the PS hose was the issue but now I find a few posts re: checking that hose when looking for leaks in that area.
So that'll be up next, and probably the lower pressure hose after I check it's condition. If this car was rusty at all, I'd have bailed on it entirely but it's clean enough that I think its still worth the work.
