To give this topic closure, I finally had a chance to take a closer look at the car, a 2002 9-3 SE. It appears to be basically solid aside from rust in the dog-leg areas, with perforation on one side. Mileage is low (68,000 miles) and I could not find anything contradicting that using the VIN and free online resources. (The prospective buyer did not want to spring for a detailed Carfax or Vincheck report.) There is no obvious sign of collision damage or body work.

The interior is in great shape except that there is a plastic panel with a spring underneath that apparently holds the sun sensor in place and the clips on that have broken so it has popped up. The sun sensor reads 0 volts in the Tech2. The SID appears to have no dead pixels and the owner's manual is in the glovebox. The car comes with 2 keys.

ABS light is on and TCS is disabled. Tech2 shows the left front wheel sensor is bad. I didn't see anything concerning in engine data, however the car had sat for quite a while with a completely dead battery so there were no stored codes and I/M status monitors were not ready. The engine did start right up after the battery was charged and there were no bad noises, no timing chain clatter. The engine runs smoothly and quietly.

Unfortunately it looks like the PCV6 update is not installed, making potential sludge a concern. The car does appear to have been well-maintained. Transmission fluid is bright red with no sign of discoloration. Likewise the coolant (Dexcool orange) was very clean with no sign of contamination.

Tires are old/dry-rotting with one in the back mismatched. The radio is dead, it does not turn on and the Tech2 kept carping that it could not communicate with it.

Likewise the HVAC blower is not working, though with the Tech2 I could see the controller voltage varying with the blower setting. One headlight is out (maybe just burned out bulb). Possibly fuses and/or relays are causing the radio and blower problems but there could be deeper issues. The Tech2 does show all HVAC flaps inside the dash to be functional. I hear the AC compressor operating so the system, while charge may possibly be low, is not empty. Since the blower is not working I could not check outlet temperature.

Didn't take the inspection any further than that. With lousy tires, questionable battery, and no license plates or insurance a test drive did not seem wise.

Also there were enough issues that the person looking to buy (who would need to rely on a mechanic to fix the car up) decided not to proceed with the purchase. The car does look like like it may be a decent little project for someone that does their own work. If I was a little younger and didn't already have 3 Saabs to take care of I might be tempted myself.
