I've had 4 or 5 dents repaired this way (I live in NJ - too many cars, small parking spots, too many inconsiderate people).
The repair is actually carried out from the inside - a long 'finger' is used to press the dent out. The technique is the important thing - the repairman must start pressing the dent out from the outside edges, circling inwards to the center. On a door ding, they usually just wedge the window gap open a bit to allow the long 'finger' tool to get in there. For a roof dent, they will probably pull the headliner off.
Of the 5 or so dents I've had repaired, only 1 is even remotely visible, and that's from only certain angles (it was the worst dent too - some @$$hole in a ute).
Good luck - JMJ
