I have a 94 900 se 2 ltr 4 turbo, 5 spd with 185k miles on it. Problems have been few, though admittedly, I run a long (116 mile r/t hi-way) daily commute. A lot depends on what type of mileage is on your car. You can beat a car to death during short commute urban stop & go driving. Also, are the maintenance records available? Regular oil changes and routine maintenance are a must for any vehicle's longevity. Some previously leased vehicles suffer in this respect.
One problem which I guarantee is commonplace is leaky AC components, ESPECIALLY the evaporator core (and that's a $1200 fix). Is there a history on this? Have the system checked for leaks before you buy- this is a fairly cheap procedure. And don't rely on the fact that cold air is coming out of the vents, even if you happen to be in Florida. With a slightly leaky system and a fresh charge, the ac can blow cold for weeks before crapping out.
Other things to check for--- upper strut mounts tearing out. (Have a mechanic rock the vehicle and examine the rubber mounts on top of the strut tower under the hood.) At this mileage, your other suspension parts shouldn't need attention though. Mine is still tight with no maintenance. However, check all alloy rims for out of round. The 205-50-16's are extremely prone to bending- even from normal road conditions. A new replacement alloy ran me about $300. You can have them straightened for about $90.
Make sure you check for coolant leaks. A few of the hoses in this year were notorious for deteriorating. Also, Saabs seem to suffer the minor annoyance of hose clamps loosening up, leading to leaks. It would be ideal if you could examine the parking spot that the car sat in after having been run and parked for a while. Any drips of coolant or oil? (Rear main seals can be a problem area-- and trannie seals on the 5 speeds also.)
Sounds like I'm telling a horror story, but I'm just condensing some of the common posts on this board. My '94 has been a true star, and to this day it's been as pleasurable, dependable, and FAST a vehicle as can be. It ROCKS! Just make sure you get an independant Saab-proficient mechanic to check it out before you buy!
