It's the sulfur in the gas. Saab says to try switching brands, but most gases have some sulfur content. Ths happens to other cars, too, it is not just a Saab problem.
The exact reason is that the cat builds up sulfur during steady-state running and releases it when that state changes. So, if you're cruising steady and come to a stop, out comes the sulfur. Same with cruising and then hammering it to pass or climb a hill, although you shouldn't be smelling it in that case unless you have a leak somewhere up front.
I saw Sunoco selling non-sulfur gas on the NJ turnpike, and the feds in the US are phasing in a sulfur limit sometime soon. Higher grades tend to have less, and it's hard to name an overall brand because the blends are different from region to region and season to season.
