Are my Automatic features working?

I just bought a 97 900SE Convertible. It has two neat features: speed/noise sensitive volume controls, and and automated temperature control heating/cooling system. Trouble is, I can't tell if either is really working.
Is there a way to check them?
When I set the auto heater at 70, the fan comes on with the up/down arrows showing, and constantly stays at "three bars" fan speed. A loaner 9-5 I recently had would adjust the fan and settings dramatically to change the temperature. You could hear and feel the difference, and see it represented on the fan control.
and
The volume on the stereo doesn't appear to change at speed/increased noise, even the the "speed on" setting is set on the stereo. Is this so subtle that I'm just not noticing it?
Anyone? Thanks for your advice!
