First, I have a V6 so I'm not exactly sure how the Saab Turbo is configured.
My experience with turbos is from large diesels. A turbo failure can be a siezed bearing which will just make the turbo vanes stop spinning. This is the better scenario...or the lesser of evils. Replace the turbo and go on your way with a much lighter wallet. In this case the car will still run.
The second scenario I have seen is more catestrophic. The turbo bearings wear, the shaft starts to wobble and the vanes hit the housing at full speed. in this case the turbine shatters and throws pieces into the intake. If there is an intercooler you may be able to pick the pieces out of the fins or you may have to replace the intercooler. If there is no intercooler you could get pieces into the engine.
Will the car still run? in the first scenario, yes. in the second...maybe.
