Well, I finally got around to installing the cupholders that I bought from Griots Garage. I mounted them with mounting clips to the door pocket, just behind the door speaker grill. They don't look too bad - obviously not OEM, but it doesn't scream "$2 slurpee holder" either.
Details:
I bought 2 cheap vanity mirrors from Pep Boys, just to get 2 sets of mounting clips. Next, I fashioned a mounting plate for each cupholder (1/8" thick plastic x width of holder(4"?) x height of holder(3"?)). I attached the mounting clips to the mounting plate using 4 short M3 screws, using the existing 2 holes in each mounting clip. Depending on what kind of mounting clips you find, you may have to drill your own holes in the mounting clips. I attached the mounting clips with the front clip (closest to the door speaker grill) about 1/2" higher than the back clip, since the door pocket edge rises up as it goes forward. The front clip attaches just in front of the (in)famous slot feature inside the door pocket, and just behind where the pocket ends. This effectively traps the front clip, preventing the cupholder from sliding fore & aft.
I attached the cupholder to the other side of the mounting plate with 3 short M4 screws (using the top 2 corner hole locations and the bottom center hole location). You MUST us the hole locations indicated on the cupholder (they are small divots) because the cupholder mechanism has very little clearance to the inside of the cupholder covers.
I used short screws all around so that they would not extend past the back of the mounting plate. You can use longer screws if you use a thicker mounting plate.
Protection:
The cupholders are not screwed to the door, so I can remove them as needed. I used large heat-shrink tubing over the mounting clips to minimize scratches to the door pocket edge. I applied a thin adhesive-backed foam between the mounting plate and the cupholder to prevent squeaks. I also used the foam on the clip-side of the mounting plate to prevent rattles & squeaks there, and to give the whole assemly a better grip on the door.
You must have the cupholder mounted as far forward as possible to prevent interference with the seat. This places your beverage right under the crook of your knee - PERFECT!
I'll try to post a picture when I have some time.
