Haynes recommends changing the filter at 100000 miles, or KM's? I will double check when I get access to the book.
At 108000 miles I changed mine, and let the old one dry out. I took it a part. It did not seem overly loaded. Some of the element further in was still snow white. Compared to ones that I took apart years ago when tanks were made of plated steel, it looked quite good. The metal gas tanks seemed to create a mess of their own.
My mpg's and performance did not change with a the new filter and O2 sensor. These were changed a preventative maintenance. It is at high RPM WOT where fuel starvation will become evedent. That can be caused by restricted filters or a worn fuel pump. I had a Volvo 264 pump wear out, and it hit a wall at 80 mph.
I will check Saab's recomendations as well.
If I am wrong I will change my tune. My experiences have suggested long life. The Bosch filters are certainly much bigger than the ones of the same media type that were used under-hood with the high pressure fuel injector systems with Volvo's 20 years ago.
