I had to have the head gasket replaced on my 1998 900SET last week. The car has about 39,000 miles on it.

I have been watching a small wet spot on the front right corner of the engine for the last 20,000 miles or so. The spot was just below the exhaust manifold, pretty obviously from the head gasket. The Saab dealer said not to be concerned unless the wet spot actually showed some coolant flow. Well last week I smelled coolant on the way to work. At first I thought it was the car next to me, but I kept smelling coolant at every stoplight. So I checked my engine and sure enough the wet spot had a small trickle of coolant running out.

The good news is the dealer (Carter VW/Saab) got my car in the same day, and gave me a loan car (VW Jetta) for the time mine was in the shop. The dealer replaced the head gasket, the 10 head bolts, and the coolant thermostat (at my request since the head was off anyway), all at No Charge/Under Warranty. Everything seems right as rain now, though I will keep any eye on everything.

My warranty problems have been minor so far. The freeze sensor on the A/C went bad and had to be replaced; the driver’s seat belt tensioner was replaced after it tripped the SRS light on the dash; the SID was replaced due to an intermittent push button; and now the head gasket. While not quite as trouble free as my 1984 Saab 900T, the NG900 is not doing too badly. However, my NG900 has a lot of miles to go to match my Classic 900.
