Okay, here we go. My A/C was leaking out of one of the hoses and the idler pulley was making some noise. After replacing mentioned I went ahead and replaced the dryer and expansion valve while I was at it. Per Townsends recommendations I drained the oil out of my compressor (barely any in there) and replaced with 2 oz of R134A Ester oil ( I’m talking about compressor oil, not the charge oil which I did do later). Not sure what was in there before although Townsend says leaving 10% of the old R12 oil is okay. After charging the system per Townsend specs, including checking pressure, my compressor now sounds as if the bearings bad. It pumps beautiful cold air but sounds as if its rattling inside. I decided to let it sit for awhile (again Townsends recommendation) but it’s still making the loud bearing like noise. My question - When I drained the original oil there sure didn’t seem to be 2 oz in the compressor. I do not know if it was R12 compressor oil originally, but I can’t imagine the Ester is too thin, or too much for the compressor. As I said, I did charge oil to the system followed by the R134A coolant , all per Townsend specs. Any ideas?????
