You can improve grip a ton by going to good summer only tires from average performance or touring all seasons while keeping the size the same. The stiffer sidewalls will firm up the steering (and the ride). If you're still not happy then firm up the suspension.
Any comparable BMW will always handle better thanks to the rwd layout, not knocking SAAB, but rwd is simply a better starting point for sporting driving than space efficiency. I took an hour test drove in a 95 base 325i with nasty fuel economy oriented and very worn Michelins and the handling was still impressive. No roll, steering the rear end with the throttle was a snap. I should also note that I have essentially zero rwd time since 1987.
